About a year ago, we identified that there was potentially a gap in the market for Scottish-themed puzzles. We’d designed a couple of puzzles using tartan, one for International Women’s Day, and one for someone’s birthday. At the same time, we created a Mother’s Day poem puzzle, which sold pretty well both through the craft markets and online. I guess you can see where this is going…
My fellow jigsaw put two and two together, and identified that there could be potential for what she called “Wee Scottish Poems”, essentially four-line, slightly irreverent messages either framed by a piece of tartan, or actually reproduced in tartan. The first batch focused on big birthdays, 40 through to 90. We made a couple of each of them to take to a craft market in Dunfermline, not really sure what would happen. In the event, we had to produce puzzles overnight to meet the demand.
Over the last year, the “Wee Scottish Poems” range has been one of our best sellers. We’ve extended the range to include things like new home, new baby, engagement, silver, ruby and golden weddings. Allowing for the fact that there is less demand for these categories, these have also sold well. We also developed puzzles for Christmas and New Year featuring Scottish messages.
As with most of our puzzles, everything is done in house. We write the poems and also design the tartans so each puzzle is completely unique.
